Daily Volleyball News – September 30: Women’s World Cup field takes shape as Serie A launches

2027 Women’s World Cup: Rankings to decide final 14 places

MODENA – The field for the 2027 FIVB Women’s Volleyball World Cup is nearing completion, with the final 14 places to be allocated based on the FIVB world rankings of 2 October.

The 32-team tournament will take place in the United States and Canada from 20 August to 5 September 2027, with the Honda Center in Anaheim hosting the quarter-finals, semi-finals and medal matches.

Defending champions Italy qualified automatically, alongside co-hosts the United States and Canada. A further 15 teams secured their places through the continental championships: Turkey, Serbia and Poland from Europe; Brazil, Argentina and Colombia from South America; Thailand, China and Japan from Asia; Egypt, Kenya and Cameroon from Africa; and Cuba, the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico from NORCECA.

The teams currently in line to qualify through the rankings are the Netherlands, Russia, Germany, the Czech Republic, Belgium, France, Slovenia, Sweden, Mexico, Ukraine, Greece, South Korea, Bulgaria and Switzerland. Russia’s participation remains subject to confirmation.

The competition returns to North America for the first time since 1974. It will also be only the second edition shared by two host nations, following the 2022 tournament.

Italian women’s volleyball: Cozzoli sets out priorities at season launch

VENICE – The Italian Women’s Volleyball League launched its 2026/27 season at the Gran Teatro La Fenice, with Vito Cozzoli formally taking over as president from Mauro Fabris.

Cozzoli said the league must build on the sport’s international success to strengthen clubs financially, raise their profile and deepen their ties with local communities. His priorities include attracting investment, improving sustainability, filling arenas and developing closer links with schools.

Managing director Enzo Barbaro confirmed that Serie A2 will adopt a single-group format and stage its own Coppa Italia Final Four. Bari is preparing to host the Serie A1 Super Cup, while Turin is being considered as the venue for the next Coppa Italia.

The event also recognised achievements off the court. Granda Volley Cuneo received the Carlo Gobbi communications award, while Ilaria Vagni and Claudia Lanza collected the Luciano Gaspari refereeing awards for Serie A1 and Serie A2 respectively.

Brescia target survival on top-flight return

BRESCIA – Banca Valsabbina Millenium Brescia unveiled their squad and new kit for 2026/27, with president Roberto Catania making survival the priority on the club’s return to Serie A1.

Youth development also remains central to the club’s plans. Millenium’s youth programme now has more than 120 players, with sporting director Stefano Vivaldi focused on helping young talent progress towards the first team.

FIPAV: Rule changes take effect across Italian volleyball

ROME – Rule changes trialled by the FIVB during the 2026 international season, including at the Volleyball Nations League, have been introduced across Italian volleyball.

The Italian Volleyball Federation confirmed that the measures took effect on 28 September and apply to all federation competitions, across every division and age group—not just the professional leagues.

Exceptions apply where a rule depends on technology that is unavailable or cannot be used because of a venue’s layout.

The move follows the CEV Board of Administration’s decision on 23 September to adopt the trial rules for the 2026/27 season. FIPAV says the aim is to ensure that match officials interpret and apply the changes consistently throughout the country.

Beach volleyball: Cervia awards to bring curtain down on domestic season

CERVIA – The Fantini Club will host the second edition of the Italian beach volleyball awards on Friday 2 October at 17:00, marking the end of the domestic summer season.

The ceremony will honour the men’s and women’s players and rookies of the year, alongside the season’s leading referee, supervisor and coach. The Italian champion club will also be recognised.

The event rounds off a season that began in Laigueglia on 18 April with the inaugural Coppa Italia per Società.
